We all know that family adventures can be a fantastic way to bond and create lasting memories, but what about taking your kids to a car race? Is it a good idea? We think it is! We are avid adventurers, who also love watching a good car race. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping, family-friendly adventure, you might want to consider taking your kids to a car race.
In this article, we’ll share some tips and insights into making your trip to the races with the family an enjoyable experience.
- Choose the Right Race: The first step is to choose a race event that’s best for your family. Local and smaller events are often a great starting point. They provide a more intimate atmosphere and are typically less overwhelming for kids compared to the larger, high-profile races. We also look for races that allow us to move around. This is especially important when watching with younger kids. There are many race tracks that have stadium seating AND open areas to run around safely. These tracks are always a hit with our family.
- Ear Protection: Safety should always be a top priority. Make sure your kids wear ear protection like noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, as the sound of roaring engines can be incredibly loud.
- Pack Smart: We carry a backpack with essentials. The list of essentials can change based on the race, but almost always includes: water, snacks, and a small first-aid kit. Race events can be long, and you never know when your child might get hungry or need a band-aid. Having these items on hand can be a real lifesaver. If the track has room to move around, we also throw in a lightweight picnic blanket.
- Explain the Rules: Before the event, take a few minutes to explain the rules of the race to your children. This will help them understand what’s happening on the track and make the experience more engaging and educational. It’s an opportunity to teach them about sportsmanship, teamwork, and strategy. We go through the different cars that will be in the race. The kids enjoy choosing a favorite (a pink and sparkly car is always a fan favorite!) and then watching for the car during the race.
- Bring Entertainment: While the races can be thrilling, they also involve periods of downtime between races. Keep your kids entertained with books, coloring books, or small games. This will help prevent boredom and make the entire experience more enjoyable.
- Get Involved: Many race events offer fun activities for kids, such as autograph sessions, pit tours, or even special areas for children. Take advantage of these opportunities to keep your kids engaged and excited.
- Embrace the Noise: This can be a challenge. The sound of the engines is one of the most exciting parts of a car race, but it can also be overstimulating for some kids (and adults). Help your kids appreciate it by explaining how these powerful machines work and why they make so much noise. You can even play a game where they guess the sound of each car based on the engine noise.
- Take Breaks: Remember that races can be quite long, so it’s essential to take breaks to stretch your legs and have a snack. Find a comfortable spot to relax between races and let your children recharge. If you can find a quieter spot, that is also helpful. Giving kids a chance to remove their ear protection and find some calm helps balance everyone back out.
- Take pictures and videos: Don’t forget to capture the moments with your camera or smartphone. The excitement on your children’s faces as they witness the race is priceless. Lately, we’ve made videos a priority. Even if it’s short, videos are really fun to go back and watch together.
- Be Patient: Lastly, be patient and flexible. Kids may get tired or overwhelmed during the day, so be prepared to leave the race if they’re not having a good time. This one can be tough if some of the group wants to stay and some want to leave, which happens in our family. We try to stay a little longer before we call it a day, hoping to always end on a high note.
Taking your kids to a car race can be an incredible bonding experience, and it’s a great way to introduce them to the world of motorsports. By following these tips, you can ensure that the day at the races is a fun and memorable adventure for the whole family. So, pack your sunscreen, snack and earplugs, and get ready for a day of high-speed excitement with your little ones!
