We just got back from a long a driving vacation, which required some creativity when it came to keeping two kids under 5 entertained! When we go on car trips, we try (when possible) to stop at rest stops, instead of gas stations or restaurants, for bathroom breaks. There is usually a little more room to stretch our lehs and get the wiggles out. Here are 5 activities to get your kids moving when taking a quick break at a rest area.
- Bubbles-we always pack a few bottles of bubbles. They don’t take up much space and the kids love blowing bubbles and running around after them. Make sure to include a plastic bag to avoid any leaky bubble messes!
- Minute Challenges- super easy and doesn’t require much planning ahead. Some ideas for getting the kids moving are: how many jumping jacks/toe touches/lunges in 1 min
- Pack a ball or Frisbee-neither takes up much space in the car and the kids will love having something to throw or kick around for a few minutes while they are out of the car.
- Races-kids love to race around and it’s a great way to expend some of that energy. Pick a safe spot and set up a quick course. A tree or bench works well. The kids can run/jump/bear crawl/skip/side step/gallop (the list is endless!) around the course.
- Tag-a classic game that will work well you is you have a few kids. Our games end up becoming a game of chase, but that’s not a problem. They’re still getting in some exercise!
These are a few ideas to help your family enjoy even the smallest moments on your next adventure! Have any awesome activities that your kids love? Let me know and it might be included in a future post!
