The Ultimate Guide to 5 Yoga Poses for Families on the Go!

Posted on January 8, 2024January 8, 2024 by the mom recess

Life on the road can be exhilarating, but let’s be real, it can also be a bit chaotic. Whether you’re road tripping, jet setting, or camping under the stars, maintaining a sense of calm amidst the adventure is important. As a mom who loves both travel and yoga, I’ve discovered that combining the two can be the ultimate recipe for family bliss on the go! So, grab your mats (or just a clear spot on the hotel room floor). Today, I’m sharing 5 yoga poses that are perfect for keeping your family centered while traveling.

Seated Travel Twist:

We all know that hours spent in planes, trains, and automobiles can leave our spines feeling a bit like pretzels. Combat that stiffness with the Seated Travel Twist. Find a comfortable spot to sit, cross one leg over the other, and gently twist towards the back, placing one hand on the opposite knee and the other behind you. This twist is a lifesaver for easing tension and promoting digestion after those indulgent vacation meals.

Tree Pose:

Get the whole family involved in this one! Stand tall, find your balance on one leg, and place the sole of the opposite foot on the inner thigh or calf (avoiding the knee). Join your hands at your heart or extend them overhead like the branches of a tree. Not only does this pose build strength and stability, but it also adds a touch of fun to your travel routine.

Neck and Shoulder Stretches:

Airport layovers are the perfect opportunity to sneak in some yoga. While waiting at the gate, roll your shoulders, tilt your head from side to side, and stretch your arms overhead. These simple neck and shoulder stretches can alleviate tension built up during long flights, leaving you refreshed and ready for your next adventure.

Child’s Pose:

Whether you’re at a rest area or taking a break during a hike, Child’s Pose is a wonderful way to regroup and connect with your breath. Kneel down, sit back on your heels, and reach your arms forward, resting your forehead on the ground. It’s a grounding pose that provides a moment of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of your travel itinerary.

The trick with this pose is that you are face down on the ground, which can be a little dicey depending on where you are…this might be a good time to pull out a towel or your travel mat!

Downward Dog:

If you’re a jet-setting family, you know the struggle of feeling cramped during long flights. Sneak in a Downward Dog or Forward Bend in the narrow airplane aisle to stretch out those tired legs and decompress your spine. It might raise a few eyebrows, but who cares? Your family’s well-being is worth it!

Remember, these poses are adaptable for all ages and fitness levels, making them perfect for family bonding. So, the next time you’re on the road, give these on-the-go yoga poses a try. Your family will thank you for the added moments of zen amidst the travel chaos.

Happy Adventuring!
